We’ve all been there: Each year, college students are expected to undergo an internship program as part of their curriculum, in order to gain work experience and allow them to practice the theories they’ve learned in school. However, interns are sometimes relegated to clerical tasks at the office, with limited opportunities to actually apply what they’ve learned in the classroom.
AXA Philippines was determined to change that. With that in mind, Project Nexus was born.
Project Nexus was designed to provide a more meaningful and holistic work experience to the students by assigning them to well-defined business projects, to serve as a supplement to their current curriculum. With this as a goal, the Talent Acquisition team set out to find students who would fit the AXA profile: academically excellent student leaders, with a passion for service.
The pioneer batch of Project Nexus interns were composed of students from some of the country’s top universities: Ateneo De Manila, University of the Philippines, and De La Salle University. For two months, these students tackled business projects specific to the divisions they were assigned. Along with these projects, carefully selected engagement activities and business awareness sessions were conducted as well, to allow them to fully appreciate the AXA organization and culture.
The internship experience culminated on August 4 at the Makati Diamond Hotel. In front of senior leaders from the organization, the interns presented their business projects, showcasing both their expertise in the fields they were assigned, as well as the growth they have experienced during their two month internship at AXA. Some students discovered new career paths to aspire for, while others saw their determination to pursue specific functions strengthened by their experience with AXA. Truly, Project Nexus has set the internship bar higher for AXA Philippines.
