In today’s dynamic world, welfare protection for both formal employees and independent contractors must keep pace to meet their evolving needs in a rapidly changing work landscape. Through the partnership between AXA Philippines, one of the country’s largest and fastest-growing insurers, and Grab and MOVE IT, drivers and riders now have access to free life insurance coverage that helps safeguard them and their families during life’s most difficult moments.
Imagine a steady hand reaching out just when the ground starts to give way—unexpected, unseen, but deeply needed. That’s what held two families of MOVE IT riders together in their moment of greatest loss. They worked hard, gave their best every day, and, when it mattered most, had the support that helped them carry on.
Rey Belarmino wasn’t just a MOVE IT rider—he was the steady heartbeat of his family.
At 53, with nearly two decades of experience on the road, he had finally joined MOVE IT in 2024 alongside two of his sons, who were also MOVE IT rider-partners. Known for being kindhearted and deeply devoted to his family, Rey spent most of his days navigating the busy streets of Metro Manila to earn a living and provide for the people he loved most.
In March, Ray suddenly fell ill and began vomiting uncontrollably. His sons rushed and brought him to the hospital. He was transferred to the Pasig City General Hospital but he passed away shortly after being declared comatose.
The loss was devastating. For his wife, Hilaria, and their four children, it felt like their world stopped. What they didn’t know, and what came as a quiet source of comfort in the days that followed, was that Rey – as one of the motorcycle taxi platform’s top-performing riders – had been covered by a free life insurance plan through Grab and MOVE IT’s partnership with AXA Philippines.
“Laking pasalamat na nakasama siya sa MOVE IT,” Hilaria shared softly. “Malaking tulong po talaga ‘yung natanggap namin.”
The insurance benefit arrived not as a solution to grief, but as a kind of embrace—an unexpected hand to hold during one of life’s most uncertain moments. It allowed the family to manage daily needs and gave them the space to begin healing without the immediate pressure of financial instability.
Rey’s son, John Rey, still in disbelief, said:
“Malaking bagay talaga ‘yung insurance, kasi kahit papaano, makakaahon ang pamilya. Kahit nawala si Papa, parang protected pa rin kami.”
Rey’s sister, Vivian, also expressed the value of having protection, saying, “Hindi lang sa pang-araw-araw na gastos. Malaking bagay 'to lalo na sa ganitong sitwasyon, na biglang nawala 'yung pangunahing bumubuhay sa pamilya. Buti na lang may ganito palang partnership sina MOVE IT at AXA.”
Another MOVE IT rider, Jay Campanero, was a devoted father of three who joined the company in 2023.
Jay had big dreams for his family—dreams built on hard work and dedication.
At 40 years old, he was a devoted husband and father of three. Since joining MOVE IT, he often maximized his hours on the road—not for luxury, but for small joys like his wife’s birthday outing, or savings for their children’s education. They were living on the third floor of his in-laws’ house. But Jay dreamed of building their own home, one brick at a time.
One Sunday in April, after a day of work and returning to his family just as he always did, he suffered a stroke and was rushed to the hospital. He never regained consciousness.
His wife, Leslie Anne, was left heartbroken and overwhelmed. She reflected that it was as if, in his final moments of strength, he made sure to come home one last time.
Just like Rey’s family, she soon discovered that Jay’s livelihood with MOVE IT came with protection she never expected. “Sobrang laking tulong sa pamilya namin,” Leslie shared. “Halos lahat ng iniisip ng asawa ko bago siya nawala—ayusin ang bahay, may panggastos para sa mga bata—unti-unti kong magagawa dahil sa binigay ng MOVE IT.”
For Leslie, it wasn’t just money. It was a symbol of Jay’s quiet strength. And a reminder that, even in absence, he was still looking after them.
Her words carry weight, but also hope: “Buti na lang pala may ganito. Kasi kung wala, paano na kami?”
She now encourages other riders to care for themselves, not just for work but for the families they return to at the end of each day.
“Hindi lang trabaho ang mahalaga. Kailangan may oras din para sa pamilya at sa kalusugan. Kailangan magtira ng lakas para makasama mo pa sila ng mas matagal.”
The Real Value of Caring for Workers
In both Rey and Jay’s stories, the life insurance benefit was not just a policy. It was a promise quietly kept. Neither family knew it was there. Neither expected it. But both felt its impact deeply.
These stories attest to how thoughtful partnerships, such as the recent collaboration between Grab, MOVE IT, PhilPacific Insurance Brokers & Managers, Inc. (Philinsure), and AXA Philippines, can provide protection that honors the hard work of everyday riders. It’s a reflection of what happens when organizations go beyond transactional relationships and choose to extend meaningful protection to all workers, especially those in the gig economy.
Extending employee benefits to non-traditional workers isn’t just forward-thinking; it’s compassionate business. AXA Philippines is committed to deliver inclusive worker benefits solutions so that more companies can have the power to offer peace of mind to the people who keep their operations moving, even outside the office walls.
Because real care doesn’t always come with fanfare. Sometimes, it arrives quietly—just when it’s needed most.
